  • Insurance / Registration for Car/Motor home

    Hi there,

We are planning to buy a motor home. My question is regarding the
registration/insurance. Do we need to show the insurance office an
international driving license, or will a german/local driving license
    suffice.

    Thank you for your feedback

I don't know about insurances, but even just to drive in Queensland
(don't know about other states, but I'm guessing it's similar) you need
a Qld licence if you're a PR and have lived in Qld for 3 or more months.
If you're a TR, you can drive on your own passport indefinitely, as long
as it is in English, or it is accompanied by an official translation. So
just a German licence will not do, you have to get it translated, or get
an international licence, which is easier I think...

If you're planning to buy after getting to Aus, but before getting your
Aus licence, I'd suggest getting the licence first. I found it quite
easy to get the Qld licence, just study the booklet, which you can buy
from Qld transport for less than 10 dollars, for a couple of hours, take
the written exam (30 questions) and walk out with a licence within the
hour (as a holder of a West European licence you don't have to do a
    practical in Qld).

Besides, the licence is really handy as a second form of ID, when you
want to open a bank account for example...

      Ahmed, Hans,

      Thanks for the reply.
The information provided was very helpful.
Besides, does somebody know how the procedure is in Victoria? Do we
have to sit the theoretical/written and practical exam, or just the
      theoretical?
      Thanks
      Sadeq
