    Hi there folks

Just a little note to inform anyone applying for a drivers license , came in
on a K1 and got married got my ssn and ead then went down to the local
driving place to apply for a permit and take the written test.

I had everything you could think of but I also had my ead they faxed all my
info down to the main people in Charleston and they said because I had the
ead they needed a letter of employment. I even called them and got through
to the same oaf who had told them it was a no go (at this time i had no
employment). He kept saying because I showed them an ead that meant I was
here to work regardless of what visa I came in on. I would just urge people
to call around before they apply check exactly what they require cause once
they have your info you basically have to follow thier rules. even if they
    are flawed

Some offices might have not needed a letter of employment but alas I have a
job now and going to take the test tommorow if the weather is better ( was
    closed today)

    that's all for now

Looking at the WV DMV site I can't see how anyone who isn't a US citizen can
get a DL there?! Sounds like they make up the rules as they go along which,
from my one brief trip there, doesn't suprise me at all!

    Andy.

I hate to say it but it looks like West Virginia is living up to its
      reputation here.

I had the same problem when I moved to Colorado.

        I thought I would be
smart by going to my local (small) DMV and thus avoid the lines at the
        main Denver office.

Boy, was I wrong! Although there were no lines,
the employees were dimwits. They had never seen an 1-551 stamp before,
and that threw them for a loop. First they refused to issue me with a
DL. Then they would only issue me with one valid until the date of the
1-551 (about six months), which I refused.

I ended up going to the
main DMV in Denver, where although I had to wait 2 1/2 hours to get
seen, they knew what a 1-551 was, they even made a call to HQ to
complain about the country bumpkins. I walked away with a brand-
spanking new 10 year drivers license.

The moral of the story is that
at the main city centre DMVs you will wait longer, but they will be
        more experienced with non-citizens.

I was at my BMV yesterday to renew my driver's license. All I had was my
old license and my EAD. When she saw the EAD she immidiately started
about how I need a letter from my employer. I told her that I'm not
employed, which confused her. Then she asked me about my green card, and
I told her that my application is in process and that in the meantime
I'm using the EAD, which is just as valid. Then she checked in some
papers and saw that with EAD nothing else was actually listed as
required so she issued my license.

You have to realize that employees
that don't often deal with immigrants don't really know what they are
doing. In my experience giving them as little information as possible is
the best thing, because too much info will confuse them. That is why I
leave my passport, visa, I-94 at home and only bring my EAD. The
passport, the visa and the I-94 do not stand alone as documents with the
BMV (they will usually want other things). But the EAD does.
          Something
that also worked for me - if one office won't do it, try another.

Oh, by the way... I don't know about other states, but the price of a DL
in Ohio increased from $9 last year to $25 this year. So me and my
husband spent 50 bucks yesterday to get them renewed, and mine is only
            good for a year.

Hmmm... good information to know. I'm in Denver too, and in a few
months once my wife is here will be going to get her license. Maybe
I'll just go directly to the main office and save ourselves a trip to
              the local office!

                Thanks again!
