WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- National Adoption Month in November focuses
attention on the increasing number of children in the U.S. child welfare system
waiting to be adopted.
Each year, the president joins the adoption community across the country in
proclaiming November as a month when Americans should be aware of adoption as a
way to build a family.
There about 1.6 million adopted children under the age of 18 -- 2.5 percent of
all U.S. children of householders, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Sixteen percent of all U.S. adopted children are African-American, 7 percent
are Asian and 2 percent are Native American.
Thirteen percent of all U.S. adoptions are foreign-born. More than 80 percent
of European-born adopted children under age 6 are from Russia or Romania, while
nearly half of foreign-born adopted children are from Asia.
More than 1.7 million U.S. households contain adopted children -- 4 percent of
all households that have children.
