suspended?

i have a rather odd question.A co worker of mine was suspended from his job.The odd funny thing is he was not even on the clock and what is worse they wanted him to go do a side job.he decided it was not right so he didn't care to go back but it eats at him everyday.my question is can you get suspended from work when you are not even on the clock or even working for the company in question,at the time of suspention?Or because he didn't want to deal with all their games and quit is he lost.I want him to make a claim but he is hesitant to do so.thank you
