What is the status of interpreter use for non/weak English speaking patients during medical exams / procedures? IS it paid by insurance or is it patient responsibility?

    Interpreter

In most cases, it is the responsibility of the patient. However, the physician may wish to address the matter. If anything, he/she will want to minimize risks associated with malpractice (should he/she miss a symptom because he/she is not able to understand the patient). A potential suggestion for the physician is that he/she insists that the patient bring an interpretor with him/her.

Interesting. CA, WA and TX have provisions for interpreters for deaf and foriegn language. The Human Rights code in Illinois requires Hospitals and Nursing homes to have 24 hour call for interpreters. I guess the hospital would have to pay for this?

        Hospital

If the physician is working in a hospital or as a member of its staff, I would assume so.
