  • California Training Pay Question

My girlfriend works at a day camp in California. Her employer mandated that all employees complete training to get a class B school bus license. After the first day of training she was told that if she did not complete all the training hours, she would not be paid for any of the hours. She was also told that if she leaves the camp within a year of getting her class B license, she will be required to re-pay all the associated costs in getting the license, including training, DMV fees, etc. Her employer hired a third-party to conduct the training at the camp on an off-day. My questions are:

    1. Is it legal for her employer to not pay wages for mandatory training in this case?

    2. Is it legal for her employer to require re-payment of costs associated with the training and licensing if she leaves the camp within one year?
