  • question on exempt professional hours

I work at a well known car dealership as an automotive technician in MA. I am also considered to be an exempt bona fide professional, which I don’t get paid for overtime. However, my work hours are from 8 am to 5 pm (a 9 hour work day), which exceeds the regular 40 hours per week. My question is: Under the labor laws, does the dealership have the right to mandate me to stay until 5pm even though all the jobs have been completed (no jobs waiting) and I have already worked the 8 hours that day?

Whether you are exempt or nonexempt, the employer has the right to control your hours. The bigger question is, however, how could an "automotive technician" be considered an exempt employee. Do you fall under any of these classifications?
