    Sometimes our employees are the first ones to arrive, or the last ones to leave. When they forget to punch in or out, I only have their word to go by as far as their hours worked for that day. We have also had problems with time-clock tampering in the past. I read in an earlier post that it would not be legal to refuse pay on days employees forget to clock in or out. If that is the case, what are our rights as employers as far as punishment for such circumstances? Any suggestions? Thanks...

    You can:

    1.) Estimate on the low side and require them to wait till the next pay period to make up the difference (risky)
    2.) Reprimand them either verbally or in writing
    3.) Demote them
    4.) Assign them to duties they dislike
    5.) Reduce their pay (with appropriate notice)
    6.) Terminate their employment

    In other words, you can discipline them any way you choose to EXCEPT by refusing to pay them.
