  • P-O'd in Ohio

I am a salaried employee. I have been living in my employers apartment for 3-4 years without paying rent. I assumed this was part of my salary. Last week I received an email that said $75 per pay will start coming from my check ---

I believed that this benefit(rent free) was pretty awesome, so I haven't asked for anything in a very long time. But I was not asked by my employer to take my money either.

Is your employer allowed to take deductions without your permission?

    Thank you,
    Pissed off in Ohio!

    And your question is?
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.

      Permission for deductions...

Ohio law is pretty much silent on this issue. Federal law is as well, except that deductions for the benefit of the employer cannot take the employee below minimum wage.

What kind of work do you do? Is it a required condition of your employment that you stay in this apartment?
I don't respond to Private Messages unless the moderator specifically refers you to me for that purpose. Thank you.
