    The company is likely paying in arrears, which is legal (how far in arrears the company can pay may be controlled by state law).

    You work this week, get paid for this week at the end of next week.

    Your friend still has the problem of needing the cash as soon as possible.

    Is it legal to hold back first paycheck? Oregon

    I have a friend who just started a new job in Portland, Oregon. He is in the computer business. He was told that his first paycheck would be held back and given to him when he leaves. He has been out of work for some months and really needs the money to pay bills. I've never heard of this practice before - is it legal?
