    I have been told by my employer that I must punch out for a half hour break any time I work more than 5 hours, but if I am the only manager in the store I am not allowed to leave the store. Can an employer force you to stay in the store even if you are off the clock?

    Yes, but if you actually work, and are non-exempt, you must be paid for the time you spend working.

      And if you are Exempt (and Salaried), then hours worked (including lunch) are legally meaningless, since Exempt Salaried employees are not paid based on hours worked.

        You can be required to stay in the store but if you are non-exempt, you must be paid for all time worked. If you do not work during that time & are non-exempt, you do not
        have to be paid.

        As DAW said, salaried exempt employees are not paid for the # of hrs. they work so you
        would just get your regular fixed weekly salary whether you do any work or not during
        that half hr.
