  • Can A Restaurant Ban Purses? Michigan

I have a friend who works for a restaurant. It is owned by a husband and wife. A few days ago the male owner told all the employees they could no longer bring in large purses or backpacks. The employees were required to sign a piece of paper stating that they were only allowed to bring in a small purse. Today the female owner told the female employees they were no longer allowed to bring in purses of any size to work. When my friend asked why, she was told to talk to the male owner.

Is this legal or is it considered discriminatory against the females in the restaurant. My friend has no idea why they are banning purses. My best guess is possible stealing. My friend has no objections to her purse being searched as she does not steal. She has medicines as well as personal feminine products she requires with her.

I told her the next time she works to ask her male boss why the total ban on purses. Any assistance is appreciate in advanced.

This would only be discriminatory if men were allowed to bring in purses.
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.
