My friend's employer (retail) continually schedules her outside of her availability. I told her that she shouldn't be skipping class when they do that, but am wondering if there is any legal issue to use as backup when she speaks to her boss about it.

Afraid not. Absent a contract, the employer can schedule any non-minor children employee to work almost any hours/shifts/schedules the employer wants. Even if there was an agreement, things can change on a go forward basis (absent a contract)."Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away".
