My employer pays us every other Monday. Unfortunately, most federal holidays are on Mondays as well. My employer refuses to allow us to get our checks early, so we end up not being able to deposit our checks until a day after we supposedly get paid. Is this legal? I would think that the law should be bent in favor of the employee not the employer.

Only one (or perhaps two) states require that when payday falls on a holiday, the employer accelerate the payday. California is not one of them. See question #4 here:
