  • Nerw Years Holiday

For the past seven years if New Years fell on a weekend we would get the Monday off. This year; just yesterday I was told that we would NOT be getting Monday off for the holiday, but instead we would have to work Monday and get the holiday pay along with a regular days worth of pay. Is that legal?

Yes, it is. No law requires an employer to provide holidays, paid or unpaid; no law prohibits an employer from changing their benefit schedule.

If you are receiving holiday pay even though you are not getting a holiday off, you are still receiving more than the law requires.
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.
