  • Discrimination for the practice of religion

I live and work in Kansas City, MO at a plasma center, ZLB Plasma Services. I have worked for the company for 15 months. I am an Assistant Manager at my location and signed a contract that said if I was terminated or resigned wihin 1 year of my agreement, on Sept. 5, 2005 I would have to repay my relocation costs. We were just informed that we will be forced to work on Sundays, coming in January. I told my District Manager that I was not willing to work on Sundays because it is the day of rest, the day of sabbath, I attend church, and I do not believe in working on Sundays. I then explained to him that I would have never accepted the position knowing I had to ever work on Sundays. Today I was asked to make a decision before tomorrow morning to either work Sundays or give my 2 week notice. Basically forcing me to work Sundays or quit. Is this discrimination? Can they rightfully ask me to resign because of my religious beliefs. I will not resign, they will have to fire me, but can they legally do that?

Employers are required to reasonably accomodate the religious practices of an employee unless doing so would create an undue hardship upon the employer. You should see if they will accomodate your religious beliefs through possible schedule changes or job reassignments. Good luck.
