  • Goleta, CA - Can you be forced to leave early?

I work at a call center in Goleta, CA, and today, when I came back from my off-the-clock lunch break, I was told to go home because I was late and because there were no calls coming in. Later the supervisor said it was really just because there was no queue (it was slow). I asked if I had to leave and she said yes. Is that allowed? I mean, I understand that they're overstaffed, but to make you leave? Every other job I've had simply offered employees the chance to leave early, but never forced them.

Yes, they can require you to go home.
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.
