  • severance pay? in md

    hi im employed in md . and on january4 we were informed that the plant i work at was shutting its doors and march 4th would be the last day .
    now their letting people go so they can get the machinery dismantled and moved to other companies . my question is do they have to pay us til the 4th of march and if so can i still collect unemployment ?

    In most cases, severance pay is not required. THe exceptionis when there is a large number of people who may be negatively affected. The law that will then kick in is the WARN Act. You can read more about the WARN Act at: WARN Act requires that 60 days notice of a layoff/job elimination occur, if the business affects a large number of people. If 60 days is not possible, then the employees will receive pay.
