    One owner two companies in Arizona

    I work for company 1 as an IT person. The owner in the past let go of the IT person for company 2, and now has me doing the IT work for company 2. I am bound to company 1, and there is no reference of me in company 2 as an official employee. Is this legal? Working for two companies was not the original agreement when I was hired.

    Unless you have a legally binding and enforceable contract that expressly and in so many words limits your work to only one of the companies, there's nothing illegal or even particularly uncommon about it.
    The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.

      The last 5.5 years I worked as an HR Director for one medium-sized multinational company whose owner also owned a number of separate tiny companies, in Canada and the US. Although I was paid by the medium-sized company I did HR work for the other tiny companies, and that was perfectly legal, in both Canada and the US.

        As long as you are getting paid in full (either salaried exempt or hourly nonexempt with overtime), the employer can ask you to do just about anything, especially if it is by the owner. Now if it were a manger asking you to do work at his home or something, you could go to the owner and ask if they wanted you to do so. But when it is the owner, you pretty much do what they ask.

        I too do HR/payroll for 6 related companies but am only paid by one. It is very common in the "services" part of a company because many times each smaller company can't justify a fulltime or even PT position.
