  • Angry in Missouri... but this has to to be illegal everywhere...

I work @ a restaurant in Missouri (though not for long b/c I am simply fed up). Every few months, the management announces that we will have to come in on a Saturday morning for "mandatory cleaning day." This means that you come in for 3 hours to literally scrape gum from under the tables, scrub down the bathrooms, do the windows, etc. If you fail to show up, they suspend your shifts for a week and take away your smoking and food privileges (I assume for a different week). Here's the kicker: we only get server wage (3.525/hr ) to work on cleaning day. Obviously, if they were to higher a professional cleaning crew, there is no way they could pay them under state minimum wage to do the job; they would easily be out a few hundred dollars as maid services can be pricey. Is this totally illegal? I did not show up to cleaning day, which was yesterday, because I plan to quit tonight. I know my fellow employees are appalled at this as well, but they feel that there is nothing they can do about it. Help!
