I was applying with a Sheriff's office and was given a bad reference from a past job. I was unable to get a copy of what was said and by who? They would not let me see anything. is that true or are do they have to give me that info ???\
    Thanks for your help

They do not have to furnish you with that information & former private employers do not have to let you see any info in your personnel file.

Sorry but they do not. Had you already been employee you would have been entitled to certain protections, but as you were not yet hired, you were not. They would still not have had to turn over the reference information, but if you were not selected as a result, there may have been other avenues for appeal. Note that this only applies to state public safety jobs.
