If your boss decides to give a mandatory day off and it is not a legal holiday, are they required to pay you for that day?

    That depends.

If you are an exempt employee, yes, your employer is required to pay you for a mandatory day off. The exception would be if you did not do any work at all during the entire work week.

If you are a non-exempt employee, then no, you have no legal expectation of being paid for time you did not work, regardless of whether you had the option to work or not.

The answer, btw, is the same regardless of whether the day is a "legal" holiday or not.
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.
