  • Wrongful termination? Retaliation? Nevada

My husband and I live in Las Vegas. I was terminated in August for supposedly putting the internet on my computer, which I did not do. Anyhow, I know Nevada is a right to work state. My husband and I worked at the same company but in different departments. One month later they terminated my husband for no reason, but we believe it was retaliation for them firing me. Are there any labor laws protecting employees from retaliation for being married? Please advise.

    Nope.

Unfortunately, being married to an ex employee is not a protected characteristic.
Not everything that makes you mad, sad or uncomfortable is legally actionable.

I am not now nor ever was an attorney.

Any statements I make are based purely upon my personal experiences and research which may or may not be accurate in a court of law.

BTW, right to work means you can't be forced to join a union to get work. It has nothing to do with this situation.
The above answer, whatever it is, assumes that no legally binding and enforceable contract or CBA says otherwise. If it does, then the terms of the contract or CBA apply.

Thanks to your responses. I know in Nevada an "at will" state means they can fire you for any reason. I did contact an attorney, and they said they will look into if there are retaliation laws. I was just hoping to get a quicker response here. It just really makes me sad that my husband worked for many years and moved up in this company and then got fired because of me. I think it is wrong. Thanks again for the responses.

What reason did they give your husband for terminating him?
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. Leo Buscaglia

They put on his termination papers, did not follow company standards. But this major casino resort, puts this on everyone's termination papers. I think the reason they do this is because if you don't follow a companies policies, then it is hard to get unemployment benefits. We are currently fighting for unemployment benefits.

            Thanks.
