    The longest that the law requires them to give you is 12 weeks. The only suggestion I can make is that you show the handbook to an attorney in your state to see if it constitutes a binding contract (which most handbooks do not), but 9 months is FAR more than the law requires them to give you. A doctor's note has no force in law in any state unless FMLA applies, and since you've been off for more than 12 weeks FMLA no longer applies even if it once did.

    Termination Notice Iowa

    I was diagnosed as a diabetic in Dec.06. I missed work for foot surgery for approximately 3 months because of healing complications. I returned to work for approximately 5 months and am off work again for pressure area on foot not healing. In Iowa, if I have all the necessary paperwork and Dr's excused in order, can they terminate me while I'm on extended leave of absence?
    They are not giving me a specific reason for term. but my policy book states that a maximum medical leave in a calendar year is 9 months.......
