I work for a large international corporation in Tennessee. They have recently enacted a rule that limits restroom usage. Apparently there have been several issues with the mens room where the toilet seats have been left in an unsanitary condition (use your imagination). The manager has since enacted a policy that only one person may use the restroom at a time after signing for a key. Restroom breaks are limited to break/lunch time. So, 100+ men must use one single restroom during 2 15 minute breaks and 1 45 minute break. The few females that work in the plant are also limited although the problem did not exist in our restroom. It has not been clarified if that is a total of 1 person or 1 person per restroom. This seems unreasonable to me. Are there any laws protecting the employee in the case of this kind of restriction? If anything, it seems to be an unhealthy policy. What if the employee had a documented physical condition that wouldn't require work restrictions except in the face of insane policies such as this one?
Also this affects handwashing. The only alternative for handwashing becomes the breakroom sink. This sink is also used for food preparation. This whole situation seems increasingly unsanitary to me. I am looking for a new job. I can't imagine what they will come up with next.
Thanks for your input
