Default NY med employer law

Just a ? for you all. Do employers have any rights to discuss the nature of a medical excuse? As far as your medical diagnosis, meds, dosages, etc. I have had an ongoing bipolar disorder and this is the first time I have been excused for a wk (been there 6 yrs). I have been pretty open with these people and now they want to start cutting my hrs, think they are wanting me to quit. (Had a bad reaction to a PRESCRIBED med, mind you)

They told me when I come back I have to promise to stay on meds. They can't say that can they? I thought my medical stuff was between me and my dr. Just wondered what the law says. I AM going to quit, just wanted to throw some legal stuff in their face before I go. LOL!

Thanks everyone!

Lori

To a certain degree, they can. Even assuming that you have protection under the ADA, they are allowed to hold you to the same standard as anyone else and they do not have to allow you to behave in ways that they would not allow someone else to behave. If that means requiring that you stay on your meds, then that's what it means.
