Default withholdings of funds due to work accident

Is it legal for an employer to with hold funds from a an employee's check to compensate for a work mishap that may have caused something to be damaged?

i.e. a car dealership that makes a worker pay for an engine they left oil out of or something.

Some states have specific laws against deducting from an employee's pay unless it is required by law, such as taxes and child support, or for the employee's benefit, such as insurance, with the employee's written authorization. Some state laws are silent on the subject.

What state do you work in?
