Unhappy Mandatory meetings and not getting paid for them. Michigan

I have a couple different questions one is, is it legal to make a meeting mandatory and not pay for it? I was working in a gas station and did not go to a meeting because it was not paid for an I got fired. I was getting a hourly rate and felt my time is worth something. Also the same place is holding my last check stub for shirts that I already paid for. Can they hold that? I had direct deposit, so I already got paid. I just want my check stub for my own records. I dont want to return the shirts because I paid 50 dollars for them and it is 3 tee shirts. I will not be reimburst for them. I am in Michigan.

Default Manditory meeting without compensation

I have the same question as Kathy. Can I be forced to attend meetings without compensation. I am classified as exepmt, however, I am paid an hourly wage including overtime and docked pay for hours under 40.

My company classifies me as exempt for the purposes of benefits. My employees are non-exempt and recieve no benefits. I am paid an hourly rate, which includes overtime and double-time. If I work less than 40 hours my pay reflects the actual nnumber of hours I work. My company expects me to attend preshift meetings without compensation. The meetings are conducted prior to my shifts normal starting time. Individuals who are late or absent from the meeting are disciplined. I think my company is taking advantage of me and my classification as exempt. If I am salaried/exempt then there are limited reasons why my pay can be docked. If I am hourly/non-exempt then they can't require me to work one minute without pay. It is a difficult situation because I will either lose my overtime or my benefits. That said, is what they're doing legal? What recourse do I have? Can the pressure to work without pay be considered a hostile work environment?
