If an employer requires an employee to travel away from the worksite for activities such as hearing tests, drug screenings, etc., (things which are NOT voluntary), is the employer required to pay non-exempt employees for their time and travel expenses?

Time, yes, because the appt is mandatory. Travel expenses, not legally, although I don't know why they wouldn't.
