My husband-to-be works 65 hours a week (12-14 hour work days).
He is salary and exempt from overtime so this is not my issue. My issue is the long hours. Is there a law against working this many hours? I feel his health is being adversely affected by the long hours (not to mention mine). |

No, nothing in the law makes it illegal to require an employee to work this many hours. In fact, it is not even all that unusual for an exempt employee to put in 60-70 hour work weeks. Or even longer.

Not being from this state, I am disturbed that an employer can insist that their full time, salaried employee be abused by working more than 40 hours per week and not get compensated for it. Is this correct? However an employee who is paid per hour (working full time) is compensated anything over 40 hours. Is this correct? Thanks! Have been searching for answers on the internet and no luck!

On the note of salaried exempt employes, can a half-time salaried employee work more than 40 hours a week? Why would they not be full-time employees at that point and entitled to a full-time salary?

I used to work at a hedge fund. We had some guys there who worked, consistently, 60 hr+ weeks. A couple of them made over $1 Million a year. One made over $5 Million/yr. Everyone else made at least $100K (except me, .Frankly, I don't think any of those guys deserved overtime for the hours that they worked over 40. Long hours were part of the deal. They were compensated for it through their salary. I think your error is in assuming that the guy who is making 50K a year is being paid based on a 40 hr work week. Usually that isn't the case. The reason he is making that much may well be because he has agreed to work 50 hrs+/week. |
