Can an Employer Take Your Money

This is going to be a long one sorry.

I work for a company supposedly as a sub contractor. Never signed a sub contractor agreement or any other form. I put in a bid to fix 15 apartments at 28,000.00 USD. I have orderd the materials and started the work. I am almost finished and my boss writes me an email stating that there are 8,000.00 dollars still outstanding in materials and what she is planning on doing is dividing 8,000.00 by 2 which is 4000.00. And on my next two paychecks subtracting that amount out of my check. Now she still has all the materials and not me and why should money for materials come out of my check when they are the companies. Basically what she is saying is that the materials need to be paid for and since they customer is not paying for them I need to pay for them and not the company and she is going to take the 8,000.00 out of my checks can she do this? I was told by a paralegal that there has to be a court order. Basically can I take legal action if she starts taking money from me?

You must be an independent contractor, right? And you have no written agreement with this company? Not a good move. I imagine you could sue, but I'm wondering what for. No contract, no breach of contract. Good faith? Maybe. But I wouldn't trust the word of a paralegal; you need to confer with an attorney.
