Default OT and Travel

I am a VA resident but my firm has me working in NC currently. I am currently working 10 hour days 4 days a week and was recently informed that this is going to increase to 12 hour days. So on Thursday not only will i have to work a 12 hour day but I will also have to drive back home which takes an additional 5 hours. It takes me 5 hours to get to the client site on Sunday evening also. I was just curious about the ramifications of working 12 hours then having to drive home an additional 5 because my employer will not pay for lodging on the 4th day. If any of us (8 people doing this) were to get into an accident would my employer be considered liable? I am assuming from what I read that my employer has no obligations to pay for the 10 hours total that I spend on the road.

Thanks for the help!
