Default bereavement

I am in NY. My father died Januray 26, 2005. My husband took a few days off so we could go down thereto PA where he died). His work gave him the time off with no problem. A few months ago my step father began working at this same place of employment as my husband. My husnad was pulled into his supervisors office Friday Aug 12, 2005 and was told a "rumor" on the floor was that my father did not die.(we later found out it was bc my step father was asked what happened and he said he did not know the details). So my step father went into the office this morning and was a bit upset bc they turned his words. He said he did not know the details but he does know my father died. I have the obit that my fathers wife sent me via email. I called my husbands work place this am and told her I would give her the obit but I was blocking ALL info out...including the name of the hospital, the funeral home, all my aunts and uncles last names and my brothers last names and my fathers and his wifes last name, That I will not block his first name nor my name. The lady was very rude on the phone and said I could not do that. I explained that she needs proof my father died and that his name will be on there and so will mine. She said fine and that she "would get what she needed". I said so you will accpet the obit with the info blocked? and again she replied "I will get what i need". My question is can I block that info out and refuse to let her have any personal info as long as my fathers name is on there with the date he died and the date of the funeral and my name is on there?

This is entirely a matter of company policy. Under the law, they do not have to grant you any bereavement leave at all, no matter what information you supply. It's entirely up to them what bereavement leave to offer, under what circumstances, and what information they will accept to grant the leave.

Thats what I do not understand is they already granted the leave this was almost 8 months ago this happened. I want to know what MY rights are as far as our families personal information, if I can block all personal info out.

You can block out as much information as you like. You will not be violating any laws by doing so.

The employer, in his turn, can revoke the leave retroactively if he wishes. And HE will not be violating any laws by doing so.

As I said, it is entirely a matter of company policy.

What would be the point of blocking that information out? All those names were already in the newspaper when the obituary was published. I understand that you are upset at the turn of events but your intransient attitude is only going to aggravate your employer. Just give them a copy of the unaltered obituary and be done with it. I don't understand why you're objecting to doing so.

Im objecting to doing so bc of how long they have waited. Over 8 months ago this happened and now bc of a "rumor" they want this. I live in a different state than where this happened. I guess I am just doing it now bc it hurts and made me mad and is the point. I have decided anyways to just turn it in un altered just to satisfy them. Thank you for your input though!!!
