Default New York DIVISION OF HUMAN RIGHTS labor Law Poster

Discrimination based on RACE, CREED, AGE, COLOR, DISABILITY, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR MARITAL STATUS is Prohibited by the New York State Human Rights Law in:

EMPLOYMENT, BY EMPLOYERS OF FOUR OR MORE PEOPLE, ORGANIZED LABOR, APPRENTICESHIPS, OCCUPATIONAL AND EXECUTIVE TRAINING
Also prohibited: discrimination in employment on the basis of Sabbath observance; prior arrest or conviction record; genetic predisposition or carrier status.

Reasonable accommodation of persons with disabilities may be required. A reasonable accomodation is an adjustment to a job or work environment that enables a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of a job in a reasonable manner.

THE RENTAL, LEASE, OR SALE OF HOUSING, LAND AND COMMERCIAL SPACE
Exceptions:
(1) rental of an apartment in an owner-occupied two-family house
(2) restriction of all rooms in a housing accommodation to individuals of the same
(3) rental of a room by the occupant of a house or apartment
(4) no restriction to sale, rental, or lease of accommodations of housing exclusively to persons 55 years of age or older, and the spouse of such persons

Also prohibited: discrimination in housing on the basis of familial status (e.g. families with children)
Permitted: reasonable modifications in cases of disability
Reasonable accommodation of person with disabilities may also be required.

PLACES OF PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION, RESORT OR AMUSEMENT (RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, HOSPITALS, CLUBS, DENTIST’S OFFICES, ETC.)
Exception: Age is not a covered classification relative to public accommodations

ADVERTISING AND APPLICATIONS RELATING TO EMPLOYMENT, REAL ESTATE, PLACES OF PUBLIC ACCOMMODATION AND CREDIT
TRANSACTIONS.

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS: NON-SECTARIAN, TAX EXEMPT, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE
Exception: is not a covered classification relative to access to educational institutions

ALL CREDIT TRANSACTIONS INCLUDING FINANCING FOR PURCHASE, MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF HOUSING
ALL ACTIVITIES OF REAL ESTATE BROKERS AND SALESPEOPLE
Also prohibited: commercial boycotts and blockbusting

If you wish to file a formal complaint with the Division of Human Rights, you must do so within one year after the discrimination occured.
The Division’s services are provided free of charge. If you wish to file a complaint in State Court, you may do so within three years of discrimination. You may not file both with the Division and the State Court.

Retaliation for filing a complaint or opposing discriminatory practices is prohibited.

Discrimination based on UAL ORIENTATION is prohibited by the New York State Human Rights Law in Employment, Public Accommodation, Housing, Educational Institutions & Credit Transactions

The law defines ual orientation as “heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality or asexuality, whether actual or perceived.”

The law defines military status as “a person’s participation in the military service of the United States or the military service of the state, including but not limited to, The Armed Forces of the United States, The Army National Guard, the Air National Guard, The New York Naval , the New York Guard and such additional forces as may be created by the federal or state government as authorized by law.”
To file a complaint of discriminatin, contact the nearest Division of Human Rights office. You must file a complaint within one year of the act of alleged unlawful discrimination. The Division’s services are free of charge.
It is also unlawful to retaliate against someone for filing a complaint of discrimination
