Default Let go without notice or severance - NYC

Director of a government funded Youth program I was let go without notice or severence. The upcoming RFP due next fall will eliminate basic skills and "remain in school" as payable milestones. However, this will not take effect for a minimum of of one and maximum of two years. This was loosely stated as the reson for dismissing me the day before my vacation. Is it legal to call someone into an office, dismiss them and tell them this is their last day?

In a word, yes.

Unless the circumstances are such that WARN is triggered, the employer is under no legal obligation to provide advance notice of termination and there can be very valid reasons in some cases not to do so.
