    Default Proof of being single

    Proof of being single

    1. Where would I get a proof of being single
document? I called the local county clerk's office since they handle
marriage licenses, but the lady on the phone laughed and said she never
heard of a document to prove you are single, said she had no idea where
you could get one. Maybe just the statement on the letter of intent to
marry saying that "I am single and free to marry" and that I sign and
    notarize that, maybe thats enough?

    2. Do I need a proof of being single
document for my foreign fiance? She is from China if that makes a
    difference.

    Thanks!

No (I assume you are applying K1 for your
fiancee and you will marry her in US).Thanks!

I had to get to get a letter saying that "I am single
and free to marry" notorized and then I had to go the the Embassy in
Istanbul and I believe the man who signed off was the Consular if that
makes sense. After that I was free to marry.

    um,

You might need such a document for the Chinese authorities if your
plan is to marry your fiancee in China (which does not appear to be your
plan since you are filing a petition for a fiancee, not a wife). You
don't need any such thing for the USA authorities.

    Regards, JEff

    Default Proof of being single

    Hi,

In my home country I was able to get this form at the local
registrar's office where they keep records of births, deaths and
marriages. But in the US I don't think such document exists.
    I have a
friend who is a US citizen and she got married abroad. They required a
'Confirmation of Single Status' document, and she had a lot of trouble
getting it simply because it does not exist. So I think in the end she
wrote a statement and notarized it at the US embassy.

    Anyway, I know
that a lot of countries require this document before you can marry, but
the US isn't one of them. What people normally do here to prove that
they are legally free to marry is just write a statement letter like you
    mentioned.

Each of us wrote a note stating that we were free to
marry each other and that we would marry within the 90 day time limit of
the K1 visa (or something very similar to that). Neither one of us got
that note notarized. We didn't notarize anything that we sent in with
the I-129f. Don't understand why everyone is all about getting
everything notarized. The I-129f instructions don't say these statements
have to be notarized so why pay for it. And we got approved within a
    problem.

    cheers

    Hi umgo,
    1. Nothing like this exists in the US----you don't need it.
    2.
I know that several NG regulars have had fiancees from the Phillipines
and they have had to provide a CENOMAR (Certificate of No Marriage) to
the officer at the consulate interview. You don't have to provide this
with your I129f petition however. Search for posts under CENOMAR or
ScottHenshaw if you want to know more.
    3. You have to provide
documentation of intent to marry your fiancee. We both wrote separate
letters (not notarized), stating that it was "my intent to marry
_________ within 90 days of his arrival after issuance of a K1 visa by
interview at the consulate in London." Hope this helps.

    Hey there!

My now hubby needed proof of him being
single to marry me in Spain, he got it at the US embassy in Madrid.
    We
did NOT need that for our K3 though
    Good Luck!!

    Hi,
I'm from Belgium and my USC boyfriend will (hopefully
) marry me in Belgium in July.
    Belgian authorities want several
documents of the USC, and one of them is "proof of non-marriage", thus
a proof that he is still single.
My boyfriend lives in Rhode Island
and the lady from the Vital Records Office in RI suggested that
document to my boyfriend before he even said anything, so obviously,
some people in the US know such thing exists and is obviously needed
when a USC gets married abroad.

So anyway, the document is from the RI
Department of Health and states that:

"This is to certify that a
search of marriage records in the State of Rhode Island was conducted
for the years 1992 through December 2003 (the last month for which
    indexes were available) for X.
No marriage record was found anywhere
in the State of Rhode Island."

This document is signed by the State
Registrar (Division of Vital Records), and there is an apostille
    attached.

    Hope this helps a bit...

    Default Proof of being single

I got married in France in January. To get married there I had to go
to the local US Consulate and get an affidavit (notarized statement
that basically stated that I swore to the consular official that I as
free to marry in the US) then I took that document to an attorney
licensed in both the US and France, who created another notarized
document stating that according to the laws of my state in the US that
I was free to marry and that the consulate here had taken my sworn
statement. Was a totally ridiculous bit of paperwork with more than a
few hands out expecting payment for the service of creating them.

Other than something like that what could you possibly provide?

    Good luck...
