    Default how do I make a payment to deceased co-worker?

    Co-workers donated hours to the employee to help before long-term disability started. The employee passed away yesterday. We still have some donated hours left, and would like to pay them out to the family. Would the check be made payable to the employee or to the estate of the employee? Would we report this on a 1099 or on the W-2?

    Estate, and 1099 (estate's TIN).

    Or if you have direct deposit, just sneak into the employee's bank account and let the other side sort things out. Not legal, but a pretty common practice (W2).
