For this one, I'm not sure if it matters what state I'm personally in or not.
I started a forum a while back for certain dancers in my area (Midwest, so this covers several states) to interact--the idea is that people will be able to find others in their area to sell outfits, arrange group practices, carpool to competitions, etc.
After I created it, I realized that if I were going to be encouraging people who frequent a forum online to meet up in real life, there could be liability issues--what if Suzie thinks she's finding a little practice partner who lives across town and it turns out to be a pedophile? Obviously I can't ask people to prove they're dancers and live in the area the forum is targeting.
I've made the area for dancers to arrange meetups members-only, but again, I can't guarantee the identity of everyone who signs up. I've also restricted posting to people 13 and over--I've said it's acceptable for parents to post FOR smaller children, but not for those children to post using the parents' account, and have said I'll remove any posts by anyone younger than 13 for safety reasons. I've also said very adamantly that members shouldn't post their personal information but rather ought to make any arrangements by private message and that I'll warn any members who I feel are posting too much information, and have advised the first meet face-to-face at a competition so everyone knows the other person is on the up-and-up (everyone gets familiar with the regulars at competitions in their area, so there are unlikely to be surprises).
How likely is it that I will be held liable, as the owner/moderator of the forum, if some kid (or older dancer or parent, for that matter) makes a bad decision and ends up meeting up with someone they shouldn't, whether something bad happens or not? (this is why I wonder if my state matters--will it be according to the laws of the state where the person lives, or the state where I live, or...?) Is there anything I can do to avoid liability, or should I just shut the thing down (just removing the meetups section will render the whole thing pointless as the idea is to find people from your own area)?
ETA: I should note, if it matters, that it wasn't set up on my own personal website/server, but one of those "free message board hosting" sites...
