My wife is currently working at a company in a VP Admin role in NH. She's been there about 10 years, but only 2 in this role, with no formal training. During that time, the owner has been in the office daily. Over the years, there have been many, MANY instances of his in-appropriate behaviour. We're talking about everything from cussing, swearing, and throwing objects across the office when he has a tantrum, to blatantly telling her not to hire women or minorities for certain positions, to threatening a former employee with a knife in his office, to (can you believe this) actually dropping his pants in the office to show the staff (male and female) the novelty underwear he received as a Christmas gift. Finally, after recent personality conflicts (basically my wife continually pointing out his errant and clearly illegal practices), he has made it clear that he wants to be rid of her for not "seeing things his way". So, he's making her life a living hell on a daily basis. WHAT are the available courses of action, at this point?

How many employees work for this company?

50-100 employees at any given time, I surmise. How would that make a difference?

Because both State and federal discrimination laws only apply to employers with a minimum threshhold for the number of employees.
The boss being a lunatic, having tantrums, cussing, etc. and being a world class jerk does not violate any laws. If she has informed him she objects to discriminating in hiring practices and she is experiencing retaliation as a result, that is prohibited and your wife may file a complaint with your State's equal rights division or the federal EEOC. |
