    Question Can I proceed to lock out? Connecticut

    I rented a space within my office.
    The shared space tenant is one month behind in rent, and is going on 2 months.

    She has belongings such as equipment in the rented space.
    I have emailed her and informed her I have changed the locks and until she pays the rent, she cannot get her equipment.
    Am I breaking the law? There is no lease. It is a verbal lease so I guess month to month.

    Even with no written lease, your tenant is subject to state landlord-tenant laws. No state with which I'm familiar allows landlords to do do-it-yourself evictions by locking tenants out. The law outlines the procedure landlords must take to carry out an eviction.

    I would suggest that before you lock the tenant out you consult a local attorney to determine the best course of action.
