I am a music librarian for a professional orchestra. I've repeatedly been told to copy complete sets of parts of music that we are renting (i.e. under copyright protection) to keep in our personal library. I initially raised concern about copyright infringement and have subsequently gone to the board with said concerns. My director tells me to copy them and I "tell" her that I do, even though I don't because I truly believe that it goes against all that I have read. I feel threatened that if I don't do this, I will lose my job; have been told by the CEO that I may loose my job b/c of this; and I have a nasty letter from the Artistic Director stating that if I didn't just "do what I was told" I might be fired. I was hired with the knowledge that I have never been a librarian, nor to I have the training, nor was any training given to me.
The board president is a lawyer and agreed that it was illegal. He said he would talk to the CEO, but that has been a while ago. He has been very ill.
Expert advice would be greatly appreciated.
