Winter is on the way and so are the colds and flus.
Last year we as a nation ran out of flu vaccines; so if your going to get a
vaccine you may want to start thinking about it soon..

Gee do you think they'll get any closer to formulating the proper
antibodies this time. I recall reading where much of the vaccine last
year was absolutely useless against the viral strain it was suppose to
protect against.

It was useless against the worst strain but not the intended stain... I think
the flu season passed rather quickly last year, in part cause people were
vaccinated to the other strain.

Not quickly enough. We got the wrong bug -- I was home sick for a week.
It was not fun.

Yes, but did your wife get the same bug? Because that would *obviously* be
a shared intimate experience. Soul melding if I ever heard it...

LOL! -- yes, she did. But for some reason I got it worse. Or, to be more
accurate, I reacted to it differently. When I get something like that I
essentially go to sleep for two or three days and just disappear except to
try to eat and drink a little. She just slows down and grumbles
(understandably) and it hangs on for longer.

I hope you're right, because I enjoy reading your posts. I work in a
medical facility, and we had a young, healthy, intelligent physician
in a nearby clinic die from influenza a few years ago. I had never
gotten a flu shot, despite the exposure to lots of sick people. I
started getting them a few years ago. I dunno if it helps of if I've
just been lucky.

But have you ever had the flu? I don't mean those little bugs people
casually call the flu, but the hit-by-truck, aching-all-over, two weeks
in bed wishing you were dead flu? I had it once in college, and now I
get the flu shot every year. Never again, if I can help it.

Once, when I was 19. Was a week in bed.

Since then, I think I may have fought it off once or twice. I have an
incredible resistance and ability to fight off sickness.

the flu shot is the medical communities "best guess" as to what the
prevalent strains of virus will be in the coming flu season. They often
hit the mark pretty well. Last year was not one of them.

Wash your hands often and keep your fingers out of your eyes, and you'll
likely never get the flu... door knobs are especially effective means
of transmitting disease.

Is it dangerous just to be in the same room as a doornob, or does one
actually have to have contact?

What level of protective clothing should we wear when removing
doorknobs from our houses? Can they simply be put in the trash, or do
they need to be disposed of as toxic waste?

And should you really be putting this information on the internet
where Al Qaeda will have access to this knowledge? (Think suitcase
doorknob bombs on the streets of New York.)

I blame this all on the collapse of social norms during the 60s. In
the 1950s no one touched a doorknob before marriage, and afterward
women always let men open the door for them.

That wasn't very nice Doug.

Fortunately, doorknobs do not transmit their dealy cargo via air. As
for protective clothing, I recommend nitrile gloves, tyvek body suits,
and and a NIOSH 91 respirator. I don't leave the house without it. If
that is unavailable, MOPP gear can be purchased from most military
surplus stores. After a few times, getting in and out of it in the
"clean room" is a snap!
With regards to doorknob disposal, if you boil them first, or use a
50-50 mix of household bleach and water, they do not need to be treated
as toxic wate.

Remember! If you get the flu, then the terrorists have won.

No. I thought it was "be on your guard, but don't do anything

Part of me hopes gas goes to 5 bucks a gallon and absolutely cripples people

Hey, it's tough, but no one said we would be able to beat terrorism
without sacrifice. Of course it isn't anything our leaders wouldn't
have done too when it was their turn to sacrifice. _Someone_ had to
keep Texas safe from the Viet Cong.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5820548/ Winter is on the way and so are the colds and flus. Last year we as a nation ran out of flu vaccines; so if your going to get a vaccine you may want to start thinking about it soon..
I'll donate my dose to anyone who wants it.
The one and only year I had a flu shot was the one and only year I came down
with the flu. It was so bad I couldn't get out of bed for days and was weak,
achy and tired for a month after I finally got out of the bed. Never again!

I'm confident I'll live. But have you ever had the flu? I don't mean those little bugs people casually call the flu, but the hit-by-truck, aching-all-over, two weeks in bed wishing you were dead flu? I had it once in college, and now I get the flu shot every year. Never again, if I can help it.
the flu shot is the medical communities "best guess" as to what the prevalent strains of virus will be in the coming flu season. They often hit the mark pretty well. Last year was not one of them. Wash your hands often and keep your fingers out of your eyes, and you'll likely never get the flu... door knobs are especially effective means of transmitting disease.
Is it dangerous just to be in the same room as a doornob, or does one actually have to have contact? What level of protective clothing should we wear when removing doorknobs from our houses? Can they simply be put in the trash, or do they need to be disposed of as toxic waste? And should you really be putting this information on the internet where Al Qaeda will have access to this knowledge? (Think suitcase doorknob bombs on the streets of New York.) I blame this all on the collapse of social norms during the 60s. In the 1950s no one touched a doorknob before marriage, and afterward women always let men open the door for them.
Doorknob condoms?

On the other hand, we need to keep a few flu bugs around in case we are
invaded by Mars.

wait.... I thought it was we had to keep buying stuff and going to the mall. Wasn't that the best way to fight terrorism? Because I've been firing repeated salvos from the counter of my local Best Buy.
You have to buy duct tape and plastic sheeting, is how I heard it.

Once, when I was 19. Was a week in bed.
OK then, you have room to talk. :-) Most people who are so blythe
about the flu don't know what they are talking about. You are just
*naturally* blythe.

Since then, I think I may have fought it off once or twice. I have an incredible resistance and ability to fight off sickness.
I am so much better at this since I started getting enough sleep. I had
chronic insomnia for *years* and I got sick constantly.

And gas masks..hurry, the Army/Navy stores are almost out.
While you are at it buy all the batteries you can find and stock up on milk
and bottled water.
Yeah, that's the ticket
