Question stunned

I am a certified nursing assistant and was recently terminated from my job for misconduct. None of this alleged misconduct was properly documented within my personal file. Long story short, my problems began when my mother was voted onto the nursing home board by the shareholders in the community. The administrator verbally expressed to myself and other employees that she was not happy about my mothers appointment to the board. Needless to say-things went from good to bad when they suddenly terminated me for defending myself against one of their obvious attempts to falsely accuse me of misconduct. Then had the nerve to also falsely accuse my mother of breaking confidentiality rules of the board-forcing her to resign from the board! Although I am her daughter-neither one of us in our roles involving the nursing home-broke any confidental rules between ourselves or to anyone else! I realize Iowa is a Right to Work state but how can they get away with this??!! They have no evidence to back their statements. In closing, the administrator never fought my unemployment.

I have no idea if Iowa is a Right to Work state or not, but that phrase means that you cannot be forced to join a union as a condition of your employment somewhere. "At will" employment means that you can quit or be discharged at any time for most any reason not prohibited by law.

Too bad you lost your job, but there is little you can do about it. Had your mother resigned from the board as soon as it became clear that the Administrator's were not happy, none of this would have happened.

In Maine, State law prohibits people from serving on a school board if they have family members working in the school system. Makes sense to avoid potential conflicts of interest.

Considering all the underhanded efforts that the administrator poured into assuring myself and my mothers demise---a policy that you wrote about may have been the appropriate action. And my mother would have resigned. I feel that after my termination there was no reason for the administrator to expect my mother to resign. The administrator should have been satisfied with terminating me. My mother will be seeking her own legal counseling for defamation of character and slander.
