Default Missouri lease termination

I am trying to terminate my lease early. The landlord is trying to charge me $3000 to terminate, but this is more than the cost if I were to stay the duration of my lease term ($2800). Is this legal? What if I moved and the landlord was able to lease the apartment to someone else?
