Default Company vehicles New Hampshire

I have found myself in an interesting situation. I work for a painting company and my boss purchased a van for the use of my crew. I am the crew manager and drive the van daily to and from the job sites/paint store. Is it legal for my boss to make me pay for the gas in the vehicle despite the fact that i should by supplying my own vehicle? Even if it was my vehicle, should i still have to pay for the gas?

Whether you *should* or not, it is legal to require you to pay for the gas. If you are not reimbursed for it, I believe you can claim it on your income tax.

How is it legal for them to require me to pay for gas? If it is indeed legal it is sure as heck unethical.

It is legal because there is no law that prohibits it.

cbg is correct on this. Your recourse is claim a non-reimbursed business expense on your personal income tax return. I'd suggest speaking with your tax advisor on how to handle. You may need to keep a mileage log and gas receipts.

NO state except California requires that you be reimbursed for personally incurred business-related expenses.
