The right to represent oneself in court is protected in both the federal courts and in Minnesota. To look at the federal statute, 28 USC §1654, go to http://uscode.house.gov/search/criteria.shtml and enter the title (28) and the section (1654), without the parentheses, into the search boxes. The Minnesota unauthorized practice of law statute, §481.02, is online at http://www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/stats/481/02.html. Both statutes, however, allow the courts to regulate who may act in a representative capacity for a litigant. If you plan to represent yourself, be prepared to speak for yourself.
