I live in the state of Maine. My brother-in-law who is in Maine also,just quit his job because he was offered a better position with another company. This past year his employer sent him to school and paid for the schooling in his field. One of his classes required him to miss 3 hours of work per week. The employer told him they would pay him for those hours and they did. Now that he quit, he just got his last paycheck and the employer deducted wages for all the time he was paid for going to class. He was left with a few dollars pay. This was not agreed upon at all. Is this legal????

No, it isn't. Since this training apparently occurred during his regular working hours, it is compensable time. He can file a claim with the state Dept. of Labor.

I didn't think so. Thank you. He'll be calling the Dept. of Labor in the morning.
