I have worked for the same company in VA for 7 1/2 years and last week I requested to see my personel file at my job but was told my our HR department that I was not allowed to see the file or any part of it. How can this be? Everything in there is related to me, why can't I see it? Is that legal?

Yes, it is legal. Though some states require that an employee be allowed to see their file upon request, VA is not one of them. The files are company property and barring a state law that says otherwise, it is up to the employer who gets to see it.
