False report to Child Protective Services

If someone makes a false report against parents of children and the
investigation shows that the report had no merit, would the parents have any
recourse against the person who made the false report?

The social worker will not divulge who made the report.

Such a scenereo was presented by a woman to Judge Judy earlier this week,
but the plaintiff failed to make her case. The suit was for harrassment.

I believe it's usually a crime to knowingly or recklessly make a false
report of child abuse. Here's a site re false reporting in CA:

12. What will happen to me if I make a report?
Anyone who reports known or suspected child abuse is protected by law from
civil or criminal liability unless it can be proven that the report was
false and that the person who made the report knew it was false. Any person,
except a mandated reporter who reports child abuse may remain anonymous.
Mandated reporters are required to give their names. However, it is helpful
to give your name and telephone number to the worker taking the report in
the event he or she needs to obtain more information later.

Thanks very much for your reply. However as an update, the parents now know who
the culprit is and they have given his name to the social worker A call to
the local police elicited the information that giving a false report is a
felony.
