I am in Michigan.
I have been forced to take a personal leave of absence due to a medical condition that worsened after I took a job. I have a bad knee and now I need surgery. I walk about 3 miles a day at work. I have been given a restriction by the doctor of no excessive walking/standing. I have not been with the company long enough to qualify for short term disablity or FMLA. I was not offered anything but a forced 30 day personal leave and told that the company does not do any work restriction for my position. Can anyone tell me if I qualify for unemployment benefits while I am on a forced leave of absence. Thanx for any help, Rob |

Not if you're not medically cleared to work. Sorry.

I just have a walking restriction. I can do anything except walk excessively. Desk work, counter work, etc.

Which means you "can" work. However your employer does not have to provide "lite duty" or the like

OK, then you'll also have to certify that you are looking for work. If you can do that, I'm not seeing a big problem, although it's not impossible the company will protest your claim. Doesn't mean they will prevail, but does mean checks will be delayed.

My wife recently went through something similar. She was hurt (not work related) and put on "lite duty" her work would not supply said work. She went back to her Doctor and he placed her on disability. This made it possible for her to collect SSI checks. She returns to full duty later this month. So my suggestion is go back to your Doctor and see if he will place you on disabilty

Perhaps, but I didn't think SSI was available for short-term periods of not being able to work.
http://connections.govbenefits.gov/ssa_en.portal Let me ask this. Following the surgery and recovery, would you be able to do the same type of work again? OP, do you have a disability policy of your own, or did you enroll in the company-sponsored disability program (if they offer one)?

Keep in mind that in Panther's state, there is a state disability plan. There is no such plan in MI.
